How to specify custom non-ferrous components
A sound development process begins before casting. Learn which information helps turn an operating requirement into a well-defined component.

ITA / ITA / KNOWLEDGECustom industrial components rarely begin with a ready-made answer. They begin with an operating problem, a drawing, a sample or a combination of these references. Organizing the input information reduces uncertainty and makes the technical assessment more objective.
Start with the component’s function
Before defining the alloy, geometry or process, explain the component’s role in the equipment. The same apparent shape may operate under completely different temperature, contact, motion or cooling conditions.
It is also useful to document how the component interacts with surrounding elements. Interfaces, supports, fastening points and connections help distinguish functional dimensions from those that may allow manufacturing adjustments.
Gather reliable references
An up-to-date technical drawing that represents the equipment’s actual condition is the most direct reference. When no drawing exists, a sample can provide important information about geometry, mounting and signs of wear.
- Drawing with identified dimensions, tolerances and revisions.
- Specified material or known composition of the existing component.
- Physical sample in sufficient condition for measurement and assessment.
- Photographs of the assembly and mounting position.
- Description of operating conditions and observed history.
Separate critical dimensions from the rest
Not every dimension has the same effect on operation. Fit diameters, support faces, alignments, hole positions and sealing areas often require specific attention. Identifying them avoids applying the same control level to the entire component without need.
Assessing the application, drawing and process together makes it possible to discuss alternatives before manufacturing. This dialogue is particularly useful for complex, cooled or non-ferrous alloy components.
A specification is a technical starting point
The clearer the initial information, the more useful the questions raised during assessment. The goal is not merely to reproduce a shape, but to understand what must be preserved for the component to perform its function within the assembly.
